Chief Justice Bathurst?s appointment was the culmination of over three decades of service in the legal profession, starting when he was admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 1972. He then worked for the leading Sydney firm E. J. Kirby & Co, and five years later was called to the NSW Bar. In 1987, he was appointed Queen?s Counsel.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, the Chief Justice served as President of both the Australian Bar Association (2008-2010) and the New South Wales Bar Association (2009-2011),
